In this first installation of our literary club, we will be discussing Chapter One of Paulo Freire's 1968 Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Chapter One focuses on, “the justification of the pedagogy of the oppressed; the contradiction between the oppressors and the oppressed, and how it is to overcome; oppression and the oppressors; oppression and the oppressed; liberation: not a gift, a self - achievement, but mutual process” (Freire, 1968). In this chapter, Freire discusses humanization and the praxis of humanization through liberation.
We will discuss how oppressed people define their own humanity outside the confines of their personal and collective oppression.
