Residency Programs

Griot : (n) a member of a class of traveling poets, musicians, and storytellers who maintain a tradition of oral history in parts of West Africa.

Griot uses musical and cultural history and creative writing to engage the minds of the young. Using music of the African Diaspora as source material, the workshop introduces students to musical and cultural history, literary devices and the art of spoken word.

Single Workshop                                                                        $250

A full day of workshopping that includes a lesson on literary devices, musical history, guided dialogue, writing exercises and performance opportunity. Workshops are scheduled per request of partner teacher. Students are provided with composition notebooks, pens and note cards that offer information about literary devices, songs and keywords.

Customizable Workshop                                                           $325

Is there a topic or literary device that you’d like your students to learn? Let me know! Workshops can be customized to fit your class’ needs based on any relevant literature or subject matter being taught. Requests must be made three weeks prior to scheduled workshop.

Four Classes Per School Year                                                   $1000

Four workshops for the entire school year. Each workshop includes a full day of workshopping for each class period. Workshops are scheduled per request of partner teacher. Eight Classes Per School Year                                                   $2000

Four workshops per semester. Each workshop includes a full day of workshopping for each class period. Workshops are scheduled per request of partner teacher. Students are provided with composition notebooks, pens and note cards that offer information about literary devices, songs and keywords.

Sixteen Classes Per School Year                                                 $4000

Eight workshops per semester. Each workshop includes a full day of workshopping for each class period. Workshops are scheduled per request of partner teacher. Students are provided with composition notebooks, pens and note cards that offer information about literary devices, songs and keywords.

After School Programming                                                          $5500

A poetry club for students with a special interest in creative writing, poetry and spoken word. The club allows them to explore and find their creative voice. They will learn more about writing and editing, performance and body language and confidence. This program will also have guest-teaching artists to ensure students are exposed to a wealth of influence and guidance. Each student is provided with a notebook and pen for writing. At the end of each club year, the young poets will have the chance to self-publish their work in a book of poetry.
